Burning Sage

🍃The practice of burning sage.

Burning herbs has been a part of ceremonial rituals for centuries. Welcoming blessings of positivity, removing negative energy and connecting us to the spiritual world.

Sage can also purify a room cleansing it of bacteria. It’s a good idea to purify a room before pranayama, yoga and meditation because you’ll be taking in deep breaths.

Burning sage before bed is a wonderful ritual and can help aid in better sleep.  Providing you a mindfulness practice to ease tension, relieve stress, becoming more grounded and having cleaner air to breath in.

Burning sage is also called smudging.  Smudging is beneficial when you buy a new home or move into a new space. Also great for after an argument, before and after having guests over or as a seasonal ritual to cleanse space.

Cautions:

Don’t breath in the smoke directly from the burning leaves.  It’s intense. Waft the smoke thoroughly throughout the room. Access the size of your space and how long you want the sage to burn for.  If you have a smaller room burning the sage for a few short minutes while waking around the room should be sufficient.

If you have pets be mindful of 1) either having them leave the room while burning the sage 2) monitor how they are reacting and limit the amount you burn. Dogs and cats can be sensitive to scents.  And so can humans!  So try a little bit for a short term period of time if it’s your first time.

Have water nearby just in case you want to put out the dried sage quickly.

Start:

Open all windows and doors throughout your home and space.

Start out facing East (where the sun rises). Bring awareness to your intention for the smudging ritual.

You will begin walk around your space facing East to start then South, West, North then finishing back at East.

Light the sage bundle and go around the room wafting the bundle and letting the smoke disperse throughout every corner.

During your journey around your space think about your intention and what you want to clear or cultivate.

Some mantras or phrases to say out loud during the process:

“Everyone who walks into this space is cleansed, happy, healthy and prosperous.  We are all connected to our inner spiritual guide, guided by intuition and have good moral and respectful intentions.  We are healed, in balance and full of love and joy. We are protected, safe and secure.”

When finished with the dried sage bundle you can press the burning end into a large shell or dish or sand to make sure it’s no longer burning.

I also end saging with “Thank you, thank you, thank you.”  Thanking the process, thanking my inner spiritual guide and thanking the universe for the ritual.
