“Rule your mind or it will rule you.”
A translation from Horace, a Roman poet
“Yoga is the restraint of the modifications of the mind-stuff.”
Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra 1.2
With the practice of yoga and meditation we can settle the mind. The conscious and subconscious thoughts distort our perceptions of ourselves and everything around us. Think of a mirror getting foggy after a hot shower. The mirror has a thick film over it making it hard to see ourselves clearly. Even when we rub the mist off the exterior it’s still not very clear. After the room cools back down coming back to room temperature the mirror is now clear again. Our thoughts consisting of expectations, memories, past emotions, judgment, etc. skew our perceptions. Through the moving meditation of a physical yoga practice or a sitting meditation we can quiet the mind stuff and see things clearly again.
Take at least 10 minutes a day to sit and meditate or practice yoga to help settle the thoughts that cloud our true selves.
